Name / ChannelDetails
R1–R5 Readability 1 Unreadable · 2 Barely readable · 3 Readable with difficulty · 4 Readable with little difficulty · 5 Perfectly readable.
S1–S9 Strength 1 Faint · 3 Weak · 5 Fairly good · 7 Moderately strong · 9 Extremely strong. S-meter '+20 dB' = 20 dB over S9.
T1–T9 Tone (CW) 1 Very rough AC hum … 7 Near-pure with ripple · 9 Perfect tone. Almost everything modern is a 9.
'59' / '599' 'You're five-nine' = perfectly readable, extremely strong. The default (often reflexive) contest exchange — sent '5NN' in CW shorthand.
